That moment when on your way to train bird dogs...40 mph down your country road, beautiful day, window down, can smell the fresh cut hay as you pass the neighbors fields, mentally going through the check list. Do I have everything I need, ie check cords, starter pistol, shotgun, shotgun shells, e collars, launcher.. and BAM, a duck flies through my open window! I kid you not!! Rang my bell but good, 3 bird dogs in the truck loose , and yes I know they should be crated, or secured for safety, I just like interacting with them as much as possible, as I was just coming off a long stretch at work. I hit the brakes, pulling the truck over to the side of the road to a stop. My mouth and face are bleeding. I am trying to understand what just happened , I thought did I just get shot ?!! Then I see the duck lying on the passenger side floor. The dogs and I just stared in disbelief, then it moved! I nearly jumped out of my skin, I then felt Midge trembling, locked on what I can best describe as a front seat point, with Jyncks backing her in the back seat,meanwhile puppy Orale was just trying process what the intruder was. It may have been a split second from 3 dogs on point in that truck to duck flailing and hand to hand combat in progress. It was worse than a bar room brawl at the old Schmidts Corner bar. I finally get my hands on the feathered little bastard and fling him out the drivers side window only to get clocked in the head again from the right, as I watch Jyncks fly through my window after it! I never put e collars on in the truck , for some reason that morning I did, controller on a lanyard around my neck , he recalled with a beep that was actually meant to be a nick, as I felt someone needs to share my pain. Midge and Jyncks vigilant for any more suicide missions in the making, poor pup Orale was a traumatized, I think more from my cussing than anything else cause I"ll tell ya a blued the air with them cuss words! Explaining to the guys what happened and why I was late, I then had to endure every dad duck joke known to man.. Why didnt you duck??, Anyone going to South Duck kota this fall? Anyone ever watch the Duck quacker? Or my favorite, Was this at the butt Quack of dawn?? Thanks fellas for the wit.
